State of Illinois-Historic Preservation Agency Selects HiSoftware’s Metadata Solutions to Provide XML-Based Enhanced Search for Digital Images

Concord, NH December 16, 2003 – HiSoftware, Inc., the leader in enterprise content quality management solutions, announced today that the State of Illinois-Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) has implemented HiSoftware TagGen Office, Metadata Server and Hi-Search™ to catalog, search and retrieve resources tagged with Dublin Core Metadata Element Set encoded in simple RDF/XML.

More than 2,000 manuscripts from the Henry Horner Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library will be made available to the public over the Web in early 2004. These documents have been digitized into full color images and cataloged, and will be searchable by title, description, subject, creator, document date, and document type. An additional 80,000 documents from the ISHL's manuscript collection have been digitized and are now being cataloged; thousands more will eventually be added to the system. HiSoftware's TagGen® Office was used to create XML text pages, and Hi-Search will provide the search capability.

HiSoftware’s Metadata solutions enable organizations to categorize and index digital content, resulting in better/faster search and retrieval of information via a corporate Intranet or the Internet. Metadata Server, which includes Hi-Search, the first "Fielded only" search services available on the market, catalogs files that contain the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set encoded in simple RDF/XML. This new functionality enables advanced search of resources described in XML-that have no native ability for Metadata to be embedded within them, including pictures, maps PDF documents and images.

Metadata, which adds the same type of intelligent tagging to documents that card catalogs supply about books, is the key to organizing and leveraging corporate knowledge. These enterprise solutions allow users to create a portal-style index of documents that can be created, searched and modified on the fly.

Web visitors will be able to see letters and documents in Lincoln's hand, broadsides from Lincoln's presidential candidacy, and even a copy of the Gettysburg Address. Additional documents from the ISHL's manuscript collection have been digitized and are now being cataloged. Viewing these documents in image form helps preserve the originals from the wear and tear of handling and helps protect them for generations to come. These documents are soon to be housed in the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. Watch for this new feature at http://www.illinois-history.gov...
